Turn It Up – Death Angel
Bay Area thrash legends Death Angel have released their heavily anticipated new live record titled The Bastard Tracks via Nuclear Blast. Recorded live at The Great American Music Hall in their hometown of San Francisco on May 22nd 2021, and streamed live soon after, The Bastard Tracks is a deep cuts collection of rarely and never performed songs from the band’s celebrated catalogue that is now available digitally, via CD and Blu-Ray. Vinyl will be released on April 29th.
In conjunction with the release the band has rolled out the live video for ‘The Absence of Light‘, which can be viewed now at https://youtu.be/cgXF6mlPvTw.
Commenting on the song, vocalist Mark Osegueda states, “'Absence of Light' is a song that I have been championing since the album that it is on called 'Relentless Retribution' was released in 2010. It’s an extremely dark song lyrically that sits on top of this thunderous and driving riff and beat. It is not a fast song by any means. But! It’s HEAVY!! DARK and HEAVY!!! We finally took the time to re-familiarise ourselves with it and we were all surprised at how HEAVY it sounded when we all played it together in the room! I’m pretty confident it will rear it’s DARK and HEAVY head in some future live sets. In front of an actual audience!”

Commenting on The Bastard Tracks, Osegueda says: "When we performed and filmed the songs for 'The Bastard Tracks' it was such a crazy time and having missed being able to perform live for so long was taking it’s toll on me to a certain degree, as I have been a live performer for the majority of my life. I must say... It was a pretty dark time. I know it was for so many of us... But! Music once again helped to pull us through it... It was a bit odd performing to no crowd...But! It felt great re-learning some deep tracks and getting on stage with the guys and unleashing this pent up aggression! And the response from everyone who tuned into it suggesting that we release it as an album was overwhelming! Well…Thanks to them here it is! I hope you enjoy it!”
Adding to that, guitarist Rob Cavestany says: "Choosing and sequencing the songs for 'The Bastard Tracks' set list was quite a different trip. All of them had rarely (and in some instances never) been played live. We hadn’t performed in front of a live audience for over a year, the longest ever for this band. It was to be filmed live at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and then broadcast worldwide on the good ol’ inter-web! I could get into that… From basically re-learning most of these songs to getting them as tight as they should be, we put our energy together and made it happen! I’m thankful for having had this goal to focus on during those (still) crazy earth crisis days. It gave us an important reason to get together at DA Studio and JAM! Literally the only time I’ve felt “normal” since 2020 was while we were jamming! Fortunately we’ve been able to do it a lot. Now, we proudly present the audio and visual recordings of those sessions. Turn it up!
P.S. - We cannot wait to exchange live energy with you as soon as possible!!"

McCOY’S YOUR BOY – FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM HEADLINE TOMORROW’S GHOSTS FESTIVAL 2022
As tickets went on sale on 26 November, TOMORROW’S GHOSTS FESTIVAL 2022 were pleased to announce their Friday night headliner….FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM
Already shaping-up to be a vintage year, Friday 28th October 2022 will be crowned by a set from the original goth rock messiahs. Formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 1984, Fields of the Nephilim have become goth scene trailblazers and die-hards to the cause ever since.
Immediately turning heads with their definitive “dust and death” image, the band also possessed a secret weapon in founding member Carl McCoy. Fronting the band with some of the recognisably ravaged vocals of the genre, McCoy and co. released their debut single “Power” in 1986 via the Beggars Banquet label and would rapidly ascend through the ranks with compositions which incorporated psychedelic, progressive, and heavy metal elements that would defy the naysayers time and time again.
With the assistance of a revolving line-up of members over the years, Fields of the Nephilim pushed the goth sound (and look) to boundary-pushing new stratospheres. Finding Indie Chart topping success with their first two albums ‘Dawnrazor’ (1987) and ‘The Nephilim’ (1988), the band’s magnetic, macabre appeal would also see them break into the mainstream on the back of hit singles including “Moonchild”, “Psychonaut” and “Summerland” all of which stormed into the Official UK Charts Top 40). Releasing a string of seminal albums between 1987 and 1991 (“Dawnrazor”, ‘The Nephilim’, ‘Elizium’ and ‘Earth Inferno’), of which the latter three would become Top 40 smashes in the Official Charts; creating a legacy that is all but immortal in the eyes of their dedicated followers.

Splitting shortly after the release of ‘Earth Inferno’, the band officially reformed as Fields of the Nephilim in 1998 with original members Tony Petit and Carl McCoy leading the charge. Steadily releasing new material such as the singles “One More Nightmare (Trees Come Down A.D.)” (2000), “From the Fire” (2002) and most recently “Prophecy” in 2016, FOTN have continued to play established venues and festivals across Europe to an undyingly loyal fanbase ever since.
Headlining the Friday night at Whitby Pavilion, Tomorrow’s Ghosts is overwhelmed to have the band back to the UK’s gothic mecca in 2022. This is guaranteed to be an unmissable headline performance from one of Goth’s most significant artists.

FOTN will join a line up of incredible acts already confirmed to be appearing at Whitby’s premier gothic and alternative arts festival. Alluring artists from across Europe & the USA, previously announced acts for the 2022 event include very special guests Into A Circle, Ghost Dance, and Balaam And The Angel, as well as exclusive performances from Bootblacks, All My Thorns, AND Evil Blizzard present… ‘Blizzoween’.

Lighting Things Up – O&O
London-based, Israeli-American folk duo O&O – Obadiah Jones & Orian Peled – have today shared their long-awaited new single, ‘A Spark Away From Fire’, following their return to the city’s live music scene last month with a full band show at the Sound Lounge.
Touted as one of the artists to watch in the UK music scene since the release of their Truth Comes Out EP in 2018, with major streaming playlist placements across Apple Music and Spotify, and festival appearances including Country to Country, Cambridge Folk Festival, Black Deer, AmericanaFestUK, when live music was brought to a halt last year the duo were determined to stay busy.
Since then, the last twelve months have seen O&O land their first TV sync on RTÉ’s hit series The South Westerlies and strike a deal with EMI Production Music, while total views on their YouTube channel – where they hosted ‘Sunday Social’ live streams throughout 2020 – are approaching 2 million, along with increasing engagement for their acoustic videos on TikTok, with the most popular among their videos approaching 100k views.
As they sifted through ideas for new music to follow the early success of their EP, multiple standalone singles, collaborations, and reimagined versions of the fan favourite ‘Dancing On The Floor’, Jones was inspired by a line in Madeline Miller’s novel The Song of Achilles. The duo loved the phrase and the potential meaning packed into those five words.

“Most of our relationship songs up to this point have been based on our personal experiences,” they explain. “While working on these lyrics, however, we dreamt up a storyline of two people being unfaithful to their respective partners. Their conflicted feelings about the affair create this duet. The fire is their passion for one another, but also the inevitable destruction of their relationships.”
‘A Spark Away From Fire’ is out now, with more new music on the way in 2022, and a UK tour in the works for April/May.

Caught In A Trap – Thyla
Thyla are sharing new single “Flush”, the latest to be taken from their long-awaited debut album out 28th January 2022 via Easy Life Records.
“Flush” continues in a rich vein of Thyla singles that have poked and prodded at the human condition. It’s a song that examines how humanity has lost itself in the digital world, becoming trapped in a network that promised to connect us but instead has ensured we become ever-more polarised. Atop its towering chorus, lead singer Millie Duthie basks in the feeling of having the strength to walk away from life online and all its confrontation, anxiety and posturing. She goes on to explain further:
“We’ve seen so much polarisation online, social media platforms act as echo chambers for the loudest and most extreme opinions. The situation is always more nuanced than the algorithm allows for. Flush is about the state of anxiety caused by comment sections, and about plotting to make some quick money and run away from it all.”
The single’s kaleidoscopic visuals almost exist as an echo of how information overload in the digital age can create distortion and chaos, as rival stimuli compete for our attention. Duthie comments further on the video:
“We chose to shoot Flush’at the abandoned village Tide Mills in East Sussex. The ruins symbolise the destruction of today’s society. We’ve abandoned our sense of community and real-world connections. With the advent of social media we were promised a world of interconnectivity but we’ve ended up in a digital dystopia; a society paradoxically more isolated and alone. The old school computer monitor references the vaporwave aesthetic: shattered dreams and broken promises of utopia.”
Thyla’s self-titled debut album was heralded with lead single “Gum“, which was premiered by Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1, and championed by the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence, Dork, The Independent, The Line Of Best Fit, NME, Paste, Stereogum and more.
Gleaning inspiration from everyday human experience – and blurring the lines of the personal and the fictional – Thyla play as voyeurs and interpreters. Their music is a playground for the shared experience, a place for art that doesn’t preach, or claim to have all of the answers. Instead, their work exists as signposts to emotional moments in time, channeling the chaos of modernity into a sanctuary built from balance and nuance, influenced by the disparate worlds of everything from Kate Bush to My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields.
On their debut album the band makes natural a step onward from their earlier EPs, working in a way that removed outside influence. In the same way that their process allowed them to make their own decisions, the resulting album is also about allowing others space to reach their own conclusions. It asks questions, rather than demands answers, and often zeroes in on the world’s polarized state, knowing when confrontation or walking away is the answer. It is also an album of internal monologues made real, punctuated with regular references to the Lewis Carroll tale Alice In Wonderland.

Thyla:
Millie Duthie (vocals)
Dan Hole (bass)
Danny Southwell (drums)
Thyla are a band that have regularly found their creative impulse heightened by a sense of heaviness and burden. Their music focusses on a journey that seems to be getting harder rather than easier, often highlighting struggles with how we attach identity and value to ourselves, and the sneaking feeling that the more we learn, the less we know.
Thyla will also headline The Waiting Room, London, on 16th Feb 2022. Tickets are available here.

Reaching Out – Pridelands
Aussie metal quintet Pridelands have revealed new single ‘The Lake of Twisted Limbs‘ from their forthcoming debut album, Light Bends, that’s due out January 14th via SharpTone Records.
Commenting on the new single, the band states, "The Lake of Twisted Limbs was a song that in a lot of ways came naturally in the writing process but took an emotional toll on all of us. It’s about attempting to pull someone back from the brink of total self-destruction and how ultimately that attempt is futile if that person refused to be saved. Getting better is sadly a choice that someone needs to make for themselves. So, in essence, the song is about reaching out despite being aware of the futility there. I think we’ve all felt that in one way or another - perhaps from both sides of the coin."
Pridelands new song follows a string of crushing singles from Light Bends that the band has rolled out over the last few months including ‘The Walls‘ and ‘Heavy Tongue‘, which has stirred up excitement and anticipation around the world. The upcoming record was produced by Jamie Marinos and band, mixed by George Lever at G1 Productions UK (Loathe, Sleep Token) and mastered by Ermin Hamidovic at Systematic Productions AUS (Architects, Northlane, Periphery).

The band adds about the new album, "Light Bends is a very personal record for us in every sense of the word. The lyrics, the instrumentals, the melodies were all written because they were stories that we wanted to tell and songs that we wanted to hear. It delves into a lot of subjects, and a lot of them came from our collective life experiences. It was therapeutic for all of us to come together, share our pain and trauma and weave it together it into our debut record. There’s nothing we would change about it and the team we worked with to make it happen are incredible from top to bottom. We sincerely hope that the people out there who listen to it can connect to Light Bends emotionally in the way that we have."

PRIDELANDS IS:
Joshua Cory (vocals), Mason Bunt (vocals), Liam Fowler (guitar), Daniel Lohrey (bass) and Joe Lipsham (drums).
“There can be no hope without despair, no love without loss,” Pridelands’ vocalist/lyricist Joshua Cory explains of Light Bends’ core lyrical concept. “The chaos is the balance and we must bend toward its will, accepting the shadow as part of the light.” “I never in a million years would’ve imagined that our debut album would end up this way,” Liam Fowler – the Melbourne-based, five-piece metal band’s guitarist/primary songwriter – proudly admits. “Being our debut album, we wanted it to be ‘perfect’.”
The arrangements throughout Pridelands’ striking 11-song collection are supple, lurching, unpredictable and exhilarating. Prepare to be blown away by sudden shifts in tone as serene moments are invaded, unexpectedly, by brutality and chaos. Pridelands take aim and really take it there on their debut record. Light Bends is one hell of a wild ride.

Light Bends Tracklisting:
01. I Reach Into Your Heart
02. The Walls
03. Parallel Lines
04. Parted Time
05. The Lake of Twisted Limbs
06. Safer Here
07. Heavy Tongue
08. Antipathy
09. Translucent Blues
10. Evergrowth
11. The Sun Will Find Us
Jamie Marinos sat in the producer’s chair for Pridelands’ second EP, 2018’s critically acclaimed Any Colour You Desire, and returned to the fold for Light Bends. But when COVID-related lockdown struck, the band took over production and engineering duties.

Taking No Prisoners – CRAWLERS
Liverpudlian four-piece CRAWLERS have had a whirlwind 12 months. The alt-rock band have become synonymous with an eclectic brand of music combining grunge, rock, pop and indie into a sound packed full of attitude and socially conscious lyricism. An attitude that has seen the band explode on social media.
The quartet reveal exciting news of live shows set for March and April 2022, playing a handful of headline shows early in the New Year.
From the grunge-tinged fuzz of last year’s ‘Hush’ and the breathless, politically-charged ‘Statues’, to the bristling, abrasive sonics of recent single ‘MONROE’, CRAWLERS take no prisoners. Their latest release, ‘Come Over (Again)’, was the final single to be released from the band’s debut EP – a further example of their distinct versatility.
Diverging from the heavy, corrosive soundscapes that have become their trademark, ‘Come Over (Again)’ embraces the ethereal ambience and intimate vulnerability of the likes of Julia Holter and Angel Olsen.
Commenting on the track, the band state that “’Come Over (Again)’ is a song we’re all incredibly proud of. The whole writing process in the studio lifted the song from a small and gentle acoustic number, to an enormously abrasive and emotional coup. We’ve never done anything like it before and it has shown us what we’re really capable of as musicians.”
Tickets for the new live shows go on sale at 9am on Friday 26th November, available from www.gigsandtours.com

Unapologetic And Provocative – Divided Heaven
Jeff Berman has not made it easy on himself. For the past 12 years the DIVIDED HEAVEN frontman has tried relentlessly to buck the typical singer-songwriter mold with his unique writing style and career path.
The new DIVIDED HEAVEN album, Oblivion, out February 4th on A-F Records (US) and Gunner Records (EU), blazes that ambition forward with a bang, a dash of weird, a pinch of Satanism, and a heavy dose of sex and politics resulting in an unapologetic and provocative DIVIDED HEAVEN album like none before.
"I had to write a record that matched the times: delicate to chaotic, heartfelt to dirty," says Berman. "Before, I would've shied away from topics such as sexual assault and victim blaming but this time I called-out the disgusting misogyny (in the track 'Reckoning') and threw shade at the abusers in our music scene (in the track 'Creep'). Before, I might've tried to portray some semblance of decency about my fellow citizenry; this time I lament that goodness and kindness are losing the culture war (in the track 'Panic') and trolling is rewarded over intelligence (in the track 'Burn Me')." Oblivion is the most ambitious DIVIDED HEAVEN album yet, as Berman states, "I landed at the geographic musical midpoint of my heart: directly between (Carole King's) Tapestry and (Motley Crue's) Shout At The Devil. Odd as that may sound, that helped guide my attempt to combine sensibility with attitude and helped me shift from Americana to overdrive rock."

Over two years, Berman enlisted four different producers to create a diverse vibe across the 10 tracks on Oblivion. Once again working with longtime producer Charlie Stavish (who most notably worked with Jenny Lewis, Vacation Manor and produced the lead single from Oblivion, the politically scorching ‘They Poisoned Our Fathers’ which features the incomparable Lydia Loveless), Berman also worked with UK-Singer-Songwriter juggernaut Frank Turner, whose production brought a whole new power to a DIVIDED HEAVEN album. In addition, Berman recorded three tracks for the album in Antwerp, Belgium with producer Tim van Doorn (longtime producer for Joe McMahon and Tim Vantol) who brought out the most graceful songs of Berman’s career, including the second single ‘Baby in the Band’. Lastly, pop producer Mike Biancaniello (who has notably worked with 5 Seconds of Summer) highlighted a new vivid hue to Berman’s songwriting to round out the album.
Album Credits:
Produced by Frank Turner, Charlie Stavish, Tim van Doorn & Michael Biancaniello
Either solo or with the band in tow, DIVIDED HEAVEN are equally proper on festival stages at Punk Rock Bowling, SXSW and the FEST as they are in the seated listening-rooms of Hotel Cafe and the Ramones Museum and has shared stages with Dave Hause, Matze Rossi, Anti-Flag, Ryoko, Spanish Love Songs, Slingshot Dakota, Jared Hart, The Flatliners, Sundowner, Tiny Stills and many more.

Folking Good News – Bellowhead
During lockdown in 2020 the 11 members of Bellowhead first re-connected online to remotely record ‘New York Girls – At Home’. That led to re-uniting in person for a one-off performance which was streamed to mark the anniversary of Hedonism.
Thousands of fans watched the concert (one of the biggest online streams of 2020) confirming that Bellowhead are still one of the biggest and most in demand UK folk acts despite not performing for nearly 5 years.
The stream led to pleas from fans for more and now the stars have aligned and they are to reunite for a mammoth tour in November 2022 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of their fourth album Broadside!
The band say “The reaction to the online concert was overwhelming and we really did enjoy playing together again. The 10th anniversary of Broadside presented an opportunity for us to take things one step further and get back out on the road. We couldn’t say no! It’s going to be lots of fun – hope you’ll join us for the party.”
Broadside was released in 2012 and produced by John Leckie. It gave the band their first Top 20 in the UK Official Album Charts and features 12 songs including the BBC Radio 2 playlisted singles ‘Roll the Woodpile Down’ and ‘10,000 Miles Away’.
Support on all dates will come from Sam Sweeney with his band. Sam is a veteran of the mighty Bellowhead and former artistic director of the National Folk Youth Ensemble. He recently released his second solo album Unearth Repeat.
Bellowhead formed in 2004 and after 12 amazing years, they called it a day in 2016. In their active years they played to thousands of people at festivals and on tour, recorded 5 studio albums (selling over a quarter of a million copies), were the proud recipients of 2 x silver discs and won a staggering 8 x BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Fans are sure to delight in the news that one of the planet’s most exciting, joyous and brilliant live bands are set to reunite for a special one-off tour in Autumn 2022.
