DAVID KITT – Standing The Test Of Time
Genre-bending Irish musician and producer DAVID KITT has shared two new tracks ahead of the release of his ninth studio album ‘Idiot Check’, out 31st March 2023.
Following January’s single release “Wishing Well”, David Kitt shares two new tracks today: “Till the End” and “Balances” (both featuring Katie Kim).
Of the AA-side release, Kitt says: “I decided to release ‘till the end/balances’ as a double a-side digital single because they come together on the album and they feel thematically and musically connected. They’re both abstract songs that explore commitment, memory, the miracle of endless love and the transformative powers of awe and wonder. They both feature Katie Kim on vocals, her vocals on till the end really transformed the song and made it one of my favourite pieces of music that I’ve ever been involved in. Thanks Katie!”
Taken from his ninth studio album ‘Idiot Check’ (out 31 March via RE:WARM), Kitt’s latest sees him tap into a diverse range of influences once more to create an ambient and atmospheric record that puts an eclectic experimental spin on traditional folk music.
Produced and recorded by Kitt himself using his “Breaking Bad mobile studio set-up”, the album was written between 2016 and 2022 in Dublin, Paris, and eventually the remote town of Ballinskelligs in south-west Kerry, where the artist moved during the pandemic and has stayed ever since. Finding inspiration in “the lack of environmental noise and distractions” while based just 30 seconds from the Atlantic Ocean, the record blends acoustic and electronic elements with expert precision — showcasing both the diverse circumstances of its inception and Kitt’s personal breadth as a songwriter and producer.
Exploring everything from the breakdown of relationships to socio-political issues and the absence of religion, ‘Idiot Check’ is both undeniably current yet glints with a permanence that ensures its tracks will stand the test of time. From the fuzzy, lo-fi “Wishing Well” fluttering with a gentle sense of magnetism, to the infectious and upbeat “Not So Soon”, and jovial, traditional folk cut “Balances”, ‘Idiot Check’ is an evergreen album as experimental as it is ageless.
The record also sees Kitt joined by a number of special guests including Dylan Lynch of Dublin alt-pop band Soda Blonde on drums on “Wave of Peace” and regular collaboratorKatie Kim providing backing vocals on several tracks.. In a real coup, he also managed to enlist the services of reclusive Canadian singer-songwriter Mary Margaret O’Hara on “Oh Folly”, with her vocals providing a spooky foil over the haunting track.
With ‘Idiot Check’ confirmed for release on 31 March 2023 via RE:WARM Records, David Kitt will also be embarking on an extensive UK and Ireland tour throughout the Spring.

Whore of Bethlehem – Offer Up Your Soul
Hailing from Austin, TX, Whore of Bethlehem have been spreading their visceral brand of brutal blackened death for over 10 years.
Originally founded in 2009 by Ryan Sylvie, the band was established to break away from the signature brutal death metal sound of Texas with a more sinister and blackened approach. Texas is fast becoming one of the underground’s most respected and reputable scenes, and Whore of Bethlehem are at the forefront of Texas blackened death.
On the altars of fire their flesh shall be incinerated and their souls bound in chains. I shall separate the sin-ridden, transient shell from the eternal essence through the application of agony; a purity of pain that will consume the mundanity of sanity as surely as it opens the skin and shatters the bones. There is meaning beyond the understanding of the human herd in my divine dissections, power too great for their faltering hearts in my glorious ritual of homicide!
Returning from the darkness, from the silent shadows, with their first full length album in six long years come Austin, Texas’ Whore Of Bethlehem. Ritual Of Homicide is an outpouring of black blasphemy and bloodstained brutality to shake the pillars of faith. Riffs twisted into agonised, abhorrent forms, guitar leads that scream with the pain of tortures unimaginable, drums that blast with infernal power and a voice torn from the unseen depths of the abyss – each element bound together with nails, thorns and sacrilege. From the irresistible intricacies of ‘Vermin’ to the spirit burning thrill of ‘Sermon Of The Malignant Spirit’, Ritual Of Homicide is a masterful album that holds fast to the hallowed forms of classic death metal while striding purposefully into the realms of sheer sonic extremity, with a heart sworn to the black and a soul pledged to hell. Rarely does such formidable force combine with such harrowing melody and fearsome atmosphere. Concluding with current single, ‘Pseudochrist’, Ritual Of Homicide is the sound of utter, irredeemable damnation.
Line-up:
James VanDenBerg – Vocals
Alan Berryman – Bass
Ryan Sylvie – Guitar
Phil King – Guitar
Sam Axelrad – Drums
While Whore Of Bethlehem’s second album, the indisputably excellent Extinguish The Light, was branded “truly sinister and monstrous” by Antichrist Magazine, that fine album pales into insignificance when placed next to the infernal majesty of Ritual Of Homicide. Released on March 24th through Comatose Music, this album is a definitive demonstration of the power of brutal death metal combined with the might, the dark arts of black metal. Prepare to offer up your souls to the lords of the pit and kneel before the Whore Of Bethlehem!
THE TURIN HORSE – Wild And Gnashing
Italian noise-rockers embrace prog and psych on new album “Unsavory Impurities”; new track streaming now.
Italy’s The Turin Horse announce the March 24th release of new album Unsavory Impurities. The album will be released on the legendary Reptilian Records in the US and Italian label Invisible Order in Europe.
Named for the historic city in the north of Italy where they formed, The Turin Horse consists of guitarist/vocalist Enrico Tauraso, formerly of Dead Elephant, and drummer Alain Lapaglia, ex-MoRkObOt. With one untitled EP under their belts, Tauraso and Lapaglia come tearing out of the gate on Unsavory Impurities. Eyes wild and teeth gnashing, the two operate in a zone of pure abandon, bashing out caustic noise rock then dropkicking it into other dimensions.
Stream the first single, “Blissed Out,” here: https://invisibleorderrecords.bandcamp.com/album/unsavory-impurities
First single “Blissed Out” serves as a perfect introduction. Ear-scraping guitar tones carry a somber melody, as frenetic drumming and a whirr of psychedelia pull the song forward. Injecting freedom and chaos into a genre known for its austerity, The Turin Horse play with prog-level exuberance and lace their raw, blown-out songs with left-field sounds, including saxophone (courtesy of baritone sax player Alessandro Cartolari of Anatrofobia and Extrema Ratio) and an arsenal of samples: “Synths, classical music, field recordings, pocket fans, data-bending files, circuit-bent machines, vegetables, anything we deem useful for our purposes,” states Tauraso.

The band’s liberated approach to abrasive music brings to mind the maniacal sludge-punk of Karp, by way of the unchained experimentalism of Today Is The Day. Tauraso states: “If we had to make a list of influences I think it would be endless… Personally I would include Today Is The Day. I’ve been a fan for many years and have always enjoyed their uncompromising vision of music. I’ve always found it cathartic.”

While honoring those who have inspired them, The Turin Horse really march to their own beat and no one else’s. As Tauraso puts it, “The thing that has conditioned us the most is the need to try to express ourselves freely. We already have to mediate with society for a good part of our daily lives and we like to think that music is our hour of fresh air.”
The band’s singular sound is thanks in part to Tauraso’s homemade rig: “We couldn’t find a bass player and I chose to see this lack as a creative opportunity to customize my guitar sound by building a large part of my gear.”
Unsavory Impurities was recorded and mixed by Massimiliano Moccia and Enrico Tauraso. It was mastered by Arik Victor at Creep Studio in Philadelphia. The cover art was created by Mow Skwoz.
Making their Reptilian Records debut with Unsavory Impurities, The Turin Horse join a stellar roster that has included Dwarves, KEN mode, Chat Pile, and many more.

DELERIUM – Aching, Romantic Technology
‘Signs’ is the first new album in seven years by ethereal Canadian electronic duo DELERIUM.
Over the course of 35 years, the Canadian duo of Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber have explored electronic music terrain as Delerium that saw a series of early albums experiment with filmic, dark ambient instrumental sounds, before they evolved into an outfit with a penchant for inviting their favourite female singers to lend their voices to ethereal, downtempo songs included on every new record.
Maintaining this trend, their exquisitely produced new album ‘Signs’ features stunning contributions from Mimi Page, Phildel, Inna Walters and KANGA, each adding levels of aching, romantic beauty to their performances.
“I think ‘Signs’ reflects that Delerium has come full-circle, from its inception as an experimental project to where we are today,” states Leeb. “Delerium was originally created as a side-project that soon took on a life of its own, taking us on an adventure that no-one could have imagined. So while the times and technology have changed, underpinning it all is our basic human connection to music and the soul of harmony that has evolved as we have moved forward.”

Leeb and Fulber initially made their name in the ongoing electronic-industrial group Front Line Assembly, using Delerium as a vehicle for crossover songs with occasional elements of trance that would emerge with 1995’s ‘Semantic Spaces’ and eventually led to massive global chart success five years later with the acclaimed dance pop anthem ‘Silence (featuring Sarah McLachlan)’.
With Front Line Assembly already part of the Metropolis Records roster, Delerium eventually signed to the label in 2016 for the release of ‘Mythologie’, their fourteenth full length album and the predecessor to ‘Signs’.

Gareth Dunlop and Lee Rogers – Choose Pain
‘The Past Is Never Dead’ is a new single by Northern Irish singer-songwriters and close friends Gareth Dunlop and Lee Rogers.
It is the title song of the first ever official documentary about the renowned but now controversial Nobel Prize-winning Southern Gothic author William Faulkner (1897-1962), which will premiere at the prestigious Oxford Film Festival in Mississippi on 3rd March.
Faulkner grew up in Oxford and wrote some of his most successful novels in the town before relocating to Hollywood in the early 1930s.
Having both released long-awaited (and well received) second solo albums in the first half of 2022, Dunlop and Rogers promoted them together on US, UK, Irish and mainland European tours with their compatriot Foy Vance. They were subsequently commissioned to write a song for the documentary, which plays over the end credits and has a lyric littered with loaded thoughts set against a stripped-down acoustic backdrop. Director Michael Modak-Truran states that “it is the perfect ending. Gareth and Lee have captured the poetic yet melancholic quality that permeates Faulkner’s musings about the influence of the past in his literature. The song helps the audience feel, at a deep level, how everyone’s past shapes their present and future.”
Examining the nuanced legacy of Faulkner, who was born into a family of segregationists, ‘The Past Is Never Dead’ applies a hybrid storytelling technique to weave multiple narrative elements together. It also goes where others have feared to tread by interweaving the complexity of his work, life and often contradictory views on race. “I wasn’t sure if modern audiences could relate to him,” continues Modak-Truran. “There were things Faulkner said that I didn’t like and still struggle to completely understand, but he is critical to our current moment. In crafting unforgettable characters and stories, his work embraces the complexity of race relations in America that still echo today. Our entire documentary team think it is incredibly special that the first audience to see ‘The Past Is Never Dead’ will be in the place where Faulkner lived and found inspiration.”
Gareth Dunlop is a singer, songwriter and producer from Belfast. He has toured extensively in the UK, USA and mainland Europe, sharing stages with artists such as Van Morrison, Stereophonics and Foy Vance. His distinctive, soulful voice and the poetic vulnerability in his songs has led to several being featured in the films Best Of Me, The Visitor and Safe Haven, TV shows such as Nashville, House, Lucifer, Bones and One Tree Hill, and advertising campaigns for Disney, Subaru and more. He released his second solo album, ‘Animal’, in early 2022.

Hailing from the small town of Carrickfergus, singer-songwriter Lee Rogers drew his initial inspiration from the classic voices of singers such as Bill Withers, Tom Waits and Marc Cohn, all bright colours from a musical palette far away from the often grim reality of life in Northern Ireland. Pulling from a vast well of timeless Americana, the songs on his 2022 album ‘Gameblood’ provided a masterclass in open-hearted, lyrical storytelling while also serving as an a diary of his diverse life experiences.

Terzo – Doom And Gloom Is Evident
‘Terzo’ : an Italian word translating as ‘the third’, it represents an additional presence that new darkwave/shoegaze/post-rock duo Terzo sensed inhabiting their most creative moments when they began working together.
Karl Clinton (former bassist in post-punk act Diskoteket, plus co-founder of improvisational project Tsantsa) and Billie Lindahl (lead singer and guitarist in dream pop/dark folk act Promise and the Monster) share a mutual penchant for dark sounding music in all its forms.
They have also both been itching to free the shackles binding them to strict timelines; not only those of the music industry, but society in general. “Terzo was born out of a discussion about songs we mutually liked and a wish to try a different work process to our then current projects,” they state. “We wanted to do whatever we wanted without restrictions, using our obsession and gut feeling as guidance.”
Their preference for music and art that embodies a degree of doom and gloom is evident on their upcoming self-titled debut album, with its central theme of ‘love and death’ linking all six tracks. Their very first studio session yielded the 10+ minute post-rock epic ‘Cymbeline’ (available now as a debut single), while in the midst of recording it they both had the sensation that a third presence was keeping them company. Intrigued by the thought, “we started talking about the appearance of a third element, in sleep and in dreams,” they explain. “Terzo is about acknowledging this, the swirl that light in the darkness generates, opening ourselves out toward our own weaknesses.”
‘Cymbeline’ is actually a unique cover of a 1991 song by the Celtic/world music singer-songwriter and composer Loreena McKennit, which has a lyric lifted from the William Shakespeare play of the same name. “We had a feeling that we could make something interesting with it,” says Lindahl. “Karl did most of the instrumental work, guitars and programming, while I recorded my vocal in one take. This song means so much to us because it was the first thing we did as a duo and I think we just sort of understood that we could do great things together.”
Terzo travelled to New York in the summer of 2022 to play their first live shows, with the video maker and photographer Johan Lundsten accompanying them to document the trip. Footage from this can be seen in the video for ‘Cymbeline’, with Lindahl adding that “we always pictured something in documentary style for this song. Johan filmed everything that we did, even just hanging around. It is very raw, but it feels right.”

Monika Roscher Bigband – Lush Symphonic Colours
Monika Roscher Bigband (MRB) is comprised of 18 musicians and exists somewhere between math-rock, prog-jazz, avant-pop and experimental electronics.
Having issued the epic and uptempo ‘8 Prinzessinnen’ (8 Princesses) VIDEO as an opening salvo from their upcoming third album at the beginning of February, they end the month with a rather more glacial follow-up.
’Starlight Nightcrash’ unfurls gradually in darkly haunting fashion and is about the beauty of the natural world as well as its frighteningly destructive power. Roscher explains that it “was written like a constant breaking of waves with an ebb and flow capable of crushing everything in the blink of an eye. Its moments of tranquility allude to the peace of mind that opens up once you face this elementary force with calm and acceptance.”
The mangled sounds of a circuit-hacked Casio keyboard flicker through the song even as her band sparkle in lush symphonic colours. “The brutal, the tender, the loving, the destructive, everything is inextricably connected. ’Starlight Nightcrash’ is like the cosmos having a dialogue with the brittleness of life,” she continues. “At its emotional core is the feeling of having escaped certain death by sheer unfathomable luck and our inability to process the fact that the natural world just moves on as before, serene and indifferent.”
One of Roscher’s band members built an LED instrument suit for her to wear and play during live performances of this song.
Formed in Munich in 2011, MRB soon made waves with thrilling live performances and the inventive ideas of Roscher, their founder, singer, guitarist and conductor. Their first two albums, ‘Failure in Wonderland’ (2012) and ‘Of Monsters and Birds’ (2016), were met with acclaim in Germany, where Jazz Echo proclaimed them ‘Newcomer of the Year’, but they also caused a stir internationally, with the US magazine DownBeat naming them as ‘Rising Stars’.
Virtuosos as individuals, as MRB they are a close-knit collective who feed on musical challenges set during recording sessions, while each of their rousing live shows is a celebration of the musical freedom and inspiration they offer each other. A brilliant big band that constantly surprises and reinvents itself, MRB love the adventure and are driven by a hunger for musical symbiosis.
Their upcoming third album, ‘Witchy Activities And The Maple Death’, is stunning proof of how fresh and exhilarating MRB sound today. Superbly recorded, it achieves a breathtaking balance of intimate fragility and symphonic intensity that lets the full sonic spectrum of a big band scream and shine in every colour imaginable. Roscher’s tension-filled and intricately detailed compositions evoke otherworldly landscapes that at times enchant with their elegiac beauty, but at others wreak havoc like the unleashed frenzy of a witches’ sabbath thick with haze.

SLØTFACE – Bringing Their A Game
SLØTFACE SHARE LYRIC VIDEOS TO “COWBOYS IN THE DARK” AND FANZINE VIDEO FOR “INDOOR KID”.
Norway’s much-loved Sløtface share today their brand new EP, AWAKE/ASLEEP, a collection of their first new material since Lasse and Tor-Arne left the band to focus on new passions outside of music and Haley took on the role of leading the new collective that Sløtface would become.
They also share lyric videos for two final songs from the EP, the shimmering “Cowboys In The Dark” and the fidgety pop of “Indoor Kid”, the latter not only paired to its lyrics but also to visuals of a fanzine compiled by Haley and featuring words and art from fans all over the world.
Last year’s changes were an amicable decision among friends as close as family and freed up Shea to push Sløtface into exciting new territories, with the band returning with a double A-side “Beta / Come Hell Or Whatever” that acted as a real statement of her intent. The smart pop-edge to “Beta” markedly different to the more band-orientated sound of “Come Hell Of Whatever”. Shea now describes Sløtface as a creative collective working with different musicians, songwriters and producers to explore what Sløtface can sound like. As that return showed us, Sløtface is whoever Sløtface wants and needs to be.
Influenced by 2020s indie icons such as Caroline Polachek and HAIM, the lead single “Beta” was co-written with songwriter and producer Mikhael Paskalev, and has their songwriting representing the next level for the band. These two singles, the winter follow-up “HAPPY” and the pop rush of “Nose” all make the track listing of their new EP.
With the new line-up having now returned to the live stage and with further plans taking shape for 2023, you know these are songs meant to be sung back at them on the stage.
