Slightly smaller in scale than previous events, no doubt due to the some of the international artists being unable to make the trip, there was a strong display of predominantly homegrown talent on show. There were a few artistic nods to the pandemic with the odd ‘fuck 2020’ tattoo to be seen. Mask wearing, however, was conspicuous by its absence.
As ever, there was a mix of seasoned punters flaunting years of inked flesh, and those with virgin skin debating whether to take the needle or just curious to see what it was all about. The majority of tattooists were fully booked both days, limiting options for those who hadn’t booked in advance. For those who couldn’t make an inky decision, a few stalls had a ‘get what you get’ lucky dip whereby you can pay and take the chances.
the event was welcome escapism from the doom and gloom of the pandemic world"
There were also plenty of flash to choose from, although many of those getting inked went with a custom design of their own. For most, tattoos are intensely personal – we spoke to Holly from Nottingham who told us that she ‘just really likes potatoes’ and proudly sported a potato ghost, alongside her roller derby and Hawaiian Tiki inspired tattoos.
Tattooing is no longer a male preserve, with the gender balance evening out in respect of both artists and attendees. As at the previous show in 2019, blackwork and realism were particularly popular styles. The old school traditional designs were less prevalent this year. For those looking for a delicate touch, one artist offered hand poke dot designs, using a centuries old technique. One relatively new and controversial trend that is increasing in popularity, but not for the fainthearted, is the blackout tattoo, whereby a section of the body is covered in solid black ink.
The close proximity to Halloween meant that stalls were adorned with plenty of skulls, always a tattooing staple, and the free sweets to lure in the punters took on a trick or treat quality, with the bowl of goodies on one stall featuring a motion activated skeleton hand that grabbed the greedy guzzlers.
This year all the food stalls and vans were indoors, probably prudent with the timing of the event moving from May to October, and featured plenty of burger choices for both vegans and carnivores. The merch stalls included the usual liquor, taxidermy and tattoo guns, as well as fancy cutthroat razors, high end designer guitars and made-to-order tattoo art gloves and signs.
The entertainment was slightly scaled down this year, with no fashion shows. However, the two acts that performed were of an especially high standard, so nobody was complaining. Lady Luck Lexy and the Riverside Boys played two sets a day of toe-tapping rockabilly, combining covers of the likes of Johnny Burnette with some authentic sounding originals.
Later on, tattooed four-piece The Fuel Girls drew the crowds to the stage with an edgy cabaret performance that combined contemporary dance, classical ballet and fire eating.
Overall, the event was welcome escapism from the doom and gloom of the pandemic world. Here’s looking forward to The Great British Tattoo Show 14th – 15th May 2022.

Cult Leader Tactics is a satire on the genre of self-help manuals. It details how to get to the top of your chosen profession, or how to get on in life in general and in affairs of the heart, by acting in a Machiavellian manner and employing dirty tricks or ‘Cult Leader Tactics’ to achieve your life goals.
Lyrically the album is made up of extracts from a fictitious self-help manual ‘Cult Leader Tactics’, a parody of the self-help manual genre. After experiencing these types of human behaviour and themes, the album arrives at the conclusion the only true answer in life is love.
These and other themes are subtly referenced in each song and explored on a collection of Paul’s best songwriting since Mansun’s imperial phase. Nowhere is this exemplified more than on the instantly catchy and destined to be classic, ‘You’ve Got No Life Skills, Baby!’, which is reminiscent of the best artrock-meets-pop moments of Mansun’s Attack Of The Grey Lantern.
Paul plays the majority of the instruments on Cult Leader Tactics 11-tracks, including guitars, drum machines and synthesisers, on an album produced with long-time collaborator, acclaimed producer Paul ‘P-Dub’ Walton at the latter’s Loft Studios, with additional engineering by Scott Knapper.
Cult Leader Tactics features guest appearances from revered musician and producer Steven Wilson, who co-wrote and plays on ‘Omega Man’ – a collaboration about his and Paul’s feelings of isolation during lockdown – Gamaliel ‘Gam’ Rendle Traynor from the band Sweat, who played, arranged and engineered all strings (recorded at Sweat Studios, Peckham, London), as well as a 288-person C.L.T. Lockdown Choir who sing on ‘Lyin’ Bout Who U Sleep With’.

Buried in dust and old memories, band founder and guitarist René Berthiaume resurrected these fragments of an unfinished track from their early band years and completed the song, before recording it for the very first time with the current band line-up.
René Berthiaume comments: "This October turns out to be our Old School October. After our remake of 'Met' we are happy to release a theoretically brand-new track. Just theoretically, because parts of this song are based on pretty old fragments that were created during the era after our first albums. We had a lot of fun picking up those parts and finalising that song into the version that it is now."
Equilibrium‘s long sold out sophomore album Sagas will finally be re-released on vinyl on November 12th. only a few copies are left to order at: https://bfan.link/Equilibrium-Sagas
Equilibrium are still busy in the studio with the recording of their upcoming 7th album, currently scheduled for 2022.
Light By The Sea recorded their songs on tape with the help of producer Eddy Bopp, who went completely wild on the production, because a lot of recording techniques and equipment had come from Sound City, or had been used by artists like Genesis back then. In the studio there was nothing too crazy for Light By The Sea and Eddy Bopp in connection with experimenting and layering sounds. This will allow you to hear something you haven’t heard for a long time.
Getting inspirations from their role models — Dead Can Dance, U2, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Phil Collins, Clannad, Fleetwood Mac and The Dandy Warhols —, they map a unique sound of combining the old and the modern taste of music together.
"Writing this album together was the greatest musical adventure we could ever experience. Stuck in our apartment during lockdown, we were surrounding ourselves with great icons in thought, who inspired our music and lyrics. We have been being nostalgic about the past, as the pandemic evoked a sort of obsession about the 'good old times' within us. We think with a lot of people this has happened lately. Therefore we want you to dive into the forgotten sound with us and enjoy this musical ride together praising our eternal heroes. Remember: only death can make icons, humans just play God. "

His sophomore album Dissolve is set for release on November 11th. The record explores Brian’s personal journey of healing from trauma and leaving evangelical christianity.
Through stories of purity culture, an abusive father, depression, anxiety, and disassociation, Dissolve shows the breakdown of the human spirit and the rebuilding that takes place through community and self love.
At 24 they have already achieved more than most, beginning their singing career on CBBC show Clash before catching the attention of TV executives who were quick to cast them in the long running BBC drama, Waterloo Road. However, it was always songwriting that burned the brightest and, after some setbacks, The KTNA were formed.
Their debut EP, Life Under Siege, kickstarted their musical project in March 2019, going on to receive support from the likes of Clash, The Fader, tmrw Mag, and BBC 1xtra. Brimming with raw honesty about past trauma whilst also looking optimistically ahead, the project resonated throughout the pandemic, as fans sought solace in the themes the EP explored.
The KTNA explain, “during this pandemic lots of people have lost their jobs, their freedoms, and sometimes their sanity. Life Under Siege has helped people through this pandemic by making people feel seen, heard, and understood. It has been an outlet for so many to cry too. Sometimes that’s all you need…”
The KTNA are delighted to be looking forward as they announce their debut UK tour, playing four shows throughout March and April, 2022.

A glimpse into a run of singles due in the coming months, ‘Real World’ was written amongst the in-between moments of a turbulent year for Natalie & Rich. Using free time amongst travelling to shows, getting caught in overnight changes to the tier system of the UK lockdown and living in a friend’s secluded, 19th century country house hotel in the Lake District; each of the forthcoming releases display Wynona’s drive and determination in equal measure.
“We had little on us, other than a change of clothes, a guitar and there was an antique grand piano in the hotel's music room. Looking out over the snow covered hills that surrounded us, and wandering the empty hotel at night, it really felt like something from The Shining.” explains vocalist Natalie. “We were encouraged by a friend and the owner of the hotel to take some time and write and that’s pretty much exactly what we did. Real World began life during this writing period.”
The pair’s second single displays a new, playful side to Wynona. Led by Natalie’s dulcet vocals and wistful, guitar-driven melodies, ‘Real World’ sees them poke fun at the cliches we are often forced into; as if it’s easier to dilute our personalities into a single label than be entirely ourselves.
Natalie continues, “On ‘Real World' I'm celebrating all aspects of my personality, even though they can sometimes conflict and contradict one another. We all struggle with identity and authenticity, especially at a time when we put ourselves on display for all to see and for others to judge. This song is for anyone who feels like they don’t fit into any perfect mould; it is okay to be anything, all things and nothing all at once.”
Now settled at home in the UK following a forced return from a life in Osaka, Japan – Wynona are partners Natalie & Rich. The pair began their sonic journey creating expressive, guitar-driven pop at their home studio in central Osaka; finding comfort and a sense of homeliness in their creative output as they began to feel isolated and homesick alone in a foreign country.
Upon their return to the UK, the release of debut single ‘Get Back To Myself’ earlier this year has seen Wynona make their breakthrough to tips from an array of tastemaker titles including The Line of Best Fit and Beats Per Minute, priming them for a run of fresh material due to be released across the remainder of 2021.
Produced by and featuring Jerry Becker of Train, as well as Jim Bogios of Counting Crows, “Ohio, I’ll Be Fine” combines the artistry of these three creative minds into a wonderfully detailed, emotionally resonant song. Clocking in at a concise three minutes, the song’s animated video casts a warm, nostalgic light on the song’s lyrical imagery, lifting your spirits while tugging on your heartstrings.
As a natural next step in a long and storied artistic career, “Ohio, I’ll be Fine” stands among Kramies’ best work to date, showcasing his knack for bringing together the personal and the universal into addictive, accessible folk-pop.
Now, just over a month since the release of her rapturously received sophomore EP If Orange Was a Place, Tems announces two June 2022 UK headline shows at Birmingham’s O2 Institute and London’s KOKO. Pre-Sale will be available via See Tickets at 10AM BST this Wednesday while General On-Sale can be purchased on Friday 29th October.
In September of 2020, Tems released her critically acclaimed debut EP For Broken Ears, instantly hitting No.1 on iTunes in five countries across Africa. Flash forward twelve months later and her undeniable talent has led her to become a truly global phenomenon. In America, she appeared on fan favourite Fountains from Drake’s new album Certified Lover Boy, made a stunning US TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and sold out shows in NY, Atlanta, Chicago and LA. Meanwhile, Essence became the official song of the summer as the track peaked on the Billboard 100 Top 10, became the most Shazamed song in the country, was remixed by Justin Bieber and became the first song written by Nigerian artists to hit No.1 on Urban Radio.
On this side of the Atlantic, the track hit the OCC Top 20 while the profound sincerity of her song writing has resulted in her being named as BBC Radio1’s Future Artist of the Month for October and Apple Music’s Global Up Next Artist. With two tracks from If Orange Was A Place currently on the BBC B-List simultaneously, high profile fans including Adele, Dave & Stormzy amongst many others and three highly-anticipated London headline dates at Lafayette that sold out within five minutes, Tems’ immensely striking talent is quick establishing her as the world’s next superstar.
