Totally Off Kilter – TOVA

Rising alternative rock band TOVA have released their new single Headcount, produced by Steph Carter (ex-Gallows).

Headcount follows previous singles Gun Dogs and Absent which were added to 56 playlists on Spotify and Deezer, amassed weeks of airplay on Kerrang! Radio and earned the band a Featured Artist of the Week spot on Kerrang! Radio presenter Alex Baker’s Fresh Blood show.

TOVA are an off-kilter four-piece rock band from the UK. Blending the in-your-face swagger of Enter Shikari and Highly Suspect with the live energy of IDLES, TOVA’s niche blend of influences immerse their rapidly growing audiences in a frenzy of intensity and emotion. The band have already proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with live, having already played two London headline shows, selling out their latest at Camden Assembly as part of a UK tour.

"The Headcount music video encapsulates the struggle of identity, of defining your illnesses and negative thoughts separately, about taking from others and acting on selfish impulse to contribute to personal gain, feeling that perhaps that will fill a void in your life, only to realise that of course, it doesn’t.

Personifying a feeling or an emotion as a dark and otherworldly figure, such as a Demon or a Vampire is part of the evolving story within TOVA’s inner monologue; therefore the horror aspect of the video was extremely important to us, as we needed to make sure that we visually captured the fear and turmoil that the lyrics created.”

The band were recently awarded an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant to put on a pre-recorded livestream ticketed event and cover costs for their upcoming EP Grapefruit, set for release in Autumn 2021. The EP deals with the singer’s depression, getting past toxic-masculinity barriers with both aggressive social commentary and curious lyricism.

FROZEN SOUL’s brand of straightforward, in-your-face death metal is a gasp of fresh air in a genre that’s stretched the very limits of technicality. Fully formed in 2018, the quintet has rapidly made a name for itself and churned the underground with a sound that evokes the old school sound of bands like Obituary, Mortician and Bolt Thrower. That reverence for death metal’s roots was apparent from Frozen Soul’s initial four-song Encased In Ice demo (which includes a cover of Mortician’s “Witch’s Coven”) that was released in early 2019 on California’s Maggot Stomp Records.

FROZEN SOUL entered the studio in early March 2020 to record its first full-length with former guitarist Daniel Schmuck handling production and mixing duties. Crypt of Ice is nothing short of a breath of very fresh and very cold air on death metal’s fiery landscape. From re-recorded demo tracks including the call-to-arms of “Encased In Ice” and the savage frost blister of “Wraith of Death”, to the brutal, pummeling and momentous guitar churn of “Arctic Stranglehold”, FROZEN SOUL has delivered a record that embraces the genre’s past whilst pushing death metal forward with frigid force.

LONG HOT SUMMERS – THE STORY OF THE STYLE COUNCIL

The long-awaited and eagerly anticipated definitive career anthology Long Hot Summers: The Story of The Style Council is out today, packed with greatest hits and unheard tracks.

Named after the band’s biggest hit, ‘Long Hot Summer’, it’s endorsed and co-compiled by Paul Weller himself. As well as the title track, the album includes the sterling debut top 5 single ‘Speak Like A Child’ plus other masterpieces such as ‘You’re The Best Thing’, ‘Ever Changing Moods’, and dance floor filler ‘Shout To The Top’. The release is paired with a brilliant Sky Arts documentary under the same name out this weekend, featuring interviews with all key members, fans and collaborators. The documentary will air on Sky Arts as the channel becomes free for everyone, moving to Freeview channel 11.

Long Hot Summers includes two unreleased tracks – an intriguing demo of the top 5 single ‘My Ever Changing Moods’ with strings, and the extended, 5-minute plus version of ‘Dropping Bombs On The Whitehouse’. Also featured are all the band’s classic singles – twelve Top 20 hits, including the debut single ‘Speak Like A Child’, the utterly sublime ‘Long Hot Summer’, plus key album tracks and fan favourites.

When Paul Weller announced The Style Council’s arrival in March 1983, he’d come a very long way. In fact, at the age of just 24, he was already a musical veteran with six albums and nine Top 10 singles under his belt with The Jam. As their leader he had become a deity-like figure and for his fans, The Jam’s split was unimaginable.

But creatively restless and of inquisitive mind, Paul jettisoned them at their height to form a collective with an eventual core line-up of Paul with Mick Talbot, Dee C Lee and Steve White.

In a quest for new sounds, the group travelled to realms previously unchartered for a pop group incorporating musical influences as wide ranging as Blue Note jazz and Chicago soul, Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, Chicago House and Jacques Brel.

At the same time, as battle lines were drawn in a decade under Margaret Thatcher culminating in the miner’s strike of 1984-85, Paul’s lyrics spoke with the language of the activist and his state of the nation addresses were both fierce and eloquent. Over four albums and 17 singles, The Style Council made a stand and became the standard bearers of progressive soulful pop and social comment. And it’s all here on this exceptional anthology.

A New Dawn – CONCLAVE

Massachusetts-USA Heavy Doom collective, CONCLAVE, have signed with Italian record label ARGONAUTA RECORDS for the Worldwide release of their forthcoming album, entitled ”Dawn Of Days”.

CONCLAVES sophomore full-length will be released on colored and black vinyl, CD and digitally in the Spring of 2021.

With a musical resume that includes such acts as WarHorse, PanzerBastard, Desolate, Tenebrae, and Benthic Realm, along with several other bands and projects over the decades, ”Dawn Of Days” will be the crushing culmination of all the members’ longtime experience. As TOURISTS prepare to release their eagerly awaited debut album this Winter, today, they release it’s title-track: “Another State”.

Tranquil and cerebral, sensory and transient, “Another State” immerses the listener into a beautiful daydream. A space to be lost-in for a time, though never completely; like even the most lucid of dreams, its blissfulness dissipates into the ether almost as soon as it materialises.

Subtle by delivery, yet ornate in design, it’s a track that captures the state of dream with inception-like detail.

Recorded by Tourists and James Bragg in their Torquay studio, in their definitive surf-tinted shoegaze style “Another State” sees the band grow layer-upon-layer of oscillating synthesisers and reverberating arpeggios with majestic end results.

Pairing “Another State” with hazy visuals that home-in on the secluded idyll of their coastal surroundings, the official video finds Tourists opening a rare window into the alternative reality where they escape to create their music.

“With the video, we wanted to give people a glimpse into our world down here in Torquay….Living here has played a big part in who we have become as people but also as a band. We have always felt like we’re in our own bubble here, cut-off from everyone else, like we’re doing our own thing musically, which has contributed hugely to our sound and our individuality which I feel is everything. So this video was our little nod to Torquay.”

“Another State” is one of ten darkly compelling songs that will feature on their eponymously titled debut album. Exploring the shadowy recesses of the human mind and existence, ‘Another State’ will draw on themes of control, manipulation and escapism, with an overriding message that all is not what it seems on the surface. A Queer Eye – Tafari

Tafari (pronounced Ta-far-eye) Anthony is a Toronto based artist whose music blends Pop, R&B and Soul. He is an artist who embodies the spirit of the modern musician. Not just a musician, but a creator.

Known for his sleek vocal tones, sultry melodies and music which oozes with personality, Tafari leaves listeners in awe – somewhat apt considering his name means “He who inspires awe”.

His influences range from artists like Prince and John Legend, to more contemporary artists like Lennon Stella and Charlie Puth, among others. Often described as a mix of Sam Smith and MNEK, Tafari creates deeply emotional songs that resonate across generations. “All of these artists are creating music that is pop in its own right, but also so different from each other”, shares the musician.

Having taken a break from music in 2018 to focus on creating new material which explored his own personal soundscape, Tafari returned early 2020 with the release of his pop anthems, “Centerfold” and “Live in a Dream.” Now he unveils the emotional “No Good,” produced by Alexander Flockhart (Off Bloom, Vera, Malou Prytz, What So Not, Kill J).

The impassioned song narrates how some relationships are just no good for us, yet we somehow still end up pursuing them for whatever reason.

Tafari confides, “It takes a lot of self-reflection to be able to realize these patterns in ourselves and even more to get out of them once we are aware. No Good is the come down and reflection after Centerfold’s blow up! Realizing that you crave the unhealthiness of the relationship. Personally, I often let people treat me like shit for way longer than I should - but once I’m done, I’m done.”

Tafari

Having found influence in female powerhouse vocalists such as Seinabo Sey, King Princess and Alicia Keys, “No Good” delivers a classic vibe, but through a modern approach. Tafari’s raw, almost broken vocals portray sincerity in his lyrics, while the powerful production emits a fiery atmosphere. The stunning, heartfelt ballad oozes nostalgia with Tafari reminiscing of a love now lost.

Tafari has seen success with his music garnering acclaim from the likes of PAPER Magazine, Gay Times and MTV to name a few. He has been nominated for a Toronto Independent Music Award and receives regular airplay on CBC Radio, with one of his singles being named one of CBC’s Most Influential Songs of 2016. Atlanta-based glam punk rockers Starbenders have released a new music video for their hypnotic single “BITCHES BE WITCHES” off their latest album ‘Love Potions‘ (out via Sumerian Records).

With a guitar riff of Tony Iommi proportions and a vocal performance that holds its own in the rock ‘n’ roll pantheon, Starbenders have crafted a potent spell that will certainly lure you in. The band have conjured a new offering, the “BITCHES BE WITCHES“ bundle which includes a Celtic-tinged, mandolin-laced interpretation of the single available here.
