TOM VEK RELEASES NEW ALBUM, NEWER SYMBOLS.
Tom Vek released his new album Newer Symbols, a complete re-work of his 2020 album New Symbols, on 8th August.
“Releasing an album at the start of the pandemic meant it didn’t get the outing it should have done, no live shows etc, so I wanted to make the tracks live on, give them all a new life” says Tom.
Harnessing the skills learned from making reworks and remixes for the likes of Foals, Everything Everything and Alt-J, UK multi-instrumentalist and producer Tom Vek (known for 2005’s cult debut LP “We Have Sound”) turns the indie-rock of New Symbols into a more electro-tinged and bombastic set of tracks with both a meaner and more profound sound.
“My process always involves mangling and re-effecting the sounds I’ve recorded, this feels like a continued evolution of these tracks. Some of them happened instantaneously and some were riddles that took some time to reveal themselves”.

Speaking on the new single ‘Survive New’ Tom says:
“The track was written before the pandemic hit but took on a new depth of meaning when the album was getting finished up. Even before the pandemic, like many people I had been through various emotional and professional challenges that made me want to write some kind of mantra to myself, and anyone else that needed it (“I know we’ll take great steps, and we’ll be proved right”). This great meaning of life tragic comedy, why sweat the small stuff when it’s kindof insane that we even won the life lottery? (“we are the beautiful just by being alive”), and no doubt that becoming a dad is fucking nuts and shapes your opinion on what attitude you want to promote (“I know we are blessed with our children and wives”). This rework 100% nods to indie-electro anthem Blue Monday, I’ve enjoyed revisiting the “choir pad” era which I used one of my first ever singles “If You Want” (2004), and swapping the splashy rock drums for the mechanic drum machine seemed fitting.”
Tom Vek will headline London Lafayette on Saturday 29th October.
