Above All – Returning Hard And Heavy

Essex-based metallic hardcore outfit Above All have announced ‘Disarm The Gods’, their upcoming three track EP – and the first new music they’ve released in over two decades – on March 25th.

Above All formed in Essex in the 1990’s with an agenda to combine the best musical elements of both hardcore and metal. The group quickly gained a reputation for delivering a brutal and intense live set, which saw them share the stage with the likes of Life Of Agony, Madball, Earth Crisis, Korn and Fear Factory.

After releasing a blistering 7” on indie label Surehand and their debut album on Roadrunner Records, the band called it a day to pursue other interests.

Fast forward two decades to the lockdown of 2020, which saw the band reform with additional guitarist Jay Rowe (Hexes) in tow, write new music, and go on to headline the successful ‘Then And Now Hardcore Festival’ in the Summer of 2021. And 26 years after their last recorded music comes the release of Disarm The Gods.

Produced and mixed by Charlie Wilson at Monolith Studios, Disarm The Gods showcases the band’s unmistakeable blend of intense hardcore, heavy breakdowns and metallic riffage.

Speaking about their new songs, vocalist and lyricist Tony Maddocks says, “We had been away far too long, but we have returned with our hardest and heaviest songs to date. Old-school fans and new listeners should not be disappointed.”

Disarm The Gods is due for release March 25th and will be available on all major digital platforms and limited edition vinyl.

Sam Outlaw – A Welcome Return

Award-winning U.S. singer-songwriter Sam Outlaw celebrated his return to the UK with the release of a brand new song, ‘Lonely Man’.

Kicking off the headline tour on 17th March for a packed crowd in London, his first time in the city since 2019, Sam said: “I was so completely blown away by the response at Omeara and truly moved to get to be playing live music again. I’ll never forget the night and how special it felt to return to a stage in the UK.”

aking inspiration both from classic country ballads and the 80s production weaved throughout much of his latest full-length record Popular Mechanics, the contemplative ‘Lonely Man’ is the second of several additional tracks to be released alongside the album, and follows his cover of Enya’s ‘Wild Child’, a duet with Molly Parden.

“This new single, though about loneliness, is actually a lot of fun,” shares the artist. “And once again I get to merge some of my favorite attributes of country music, like the pedal steel, with pop and rock sounds that take the song to a completely unexpected place. Really proud of this one and kudos to Cheyenne Medders who so skillfully produced the track.”

The tour continues with support from Ruthie Collins on all dates, who also joins Sam onstage as part of his band, along with Medders – limited tickets remain for all shows:

The second of three shows at the historic Budokan arena in Tokyo, on 6th December 1983, would make history as first live broadcast between Japan and MTV in America, an amazing achievement for its time. This performance has previously only been available on VHS. The concert featured some of ASIA’s biggest and most memorable tracks including, Time Again, Only Time Will Tell, Sole Survivor, Wildest Dreams and the global hit single Heat Of The Moment.

Greg Lake stepped in, at short notice, following the sudden departure of ASIA’s founder member John Wetton ahead of the Japanese dates. Despite a short period for Lake to learn the songs, and some changes to the arrangements to accommodate Lake’s different vocal range, the Japanese shows were hailed a great success.

Carl Palmer was proud of his former ELP bandmate for performing exceptionally in the situation. “Greg Lake did a great job jumping into John’s shoes. So many songs to sing, he did it so well. It was impressive.”

Geoff Downes, too, was pleased with the event, especially given the massive undertaking. “It was a grand and sumptuous affair. The stage was the iconic ‘A-frame’ shape we had for the US tour. I think we pulled it off admirably in the end. There were some good people behind us: crew, lighting designers, cameramen and backing singers, it was quite a production.”

“The show was an important global commitment,” says Steve Howe, “so we had to rise to the occasion, which we did, with Greg’s help. We couldn’t have done it without him, for sure.”

For Downes, the release stands as a testament to the band’s resilience. “It deserves its place in the Asia catalogue. Aside from its musical strengths, it demonstrates the level of professionalism that we have always striven to bring to the ASIA name.”

UNBOWED – Remember The Name!

Canadian extreme metal band UNBOWED has announced the impending release of their 3rd full-length album, “Colour The Soul,” will be released on May 20th. The band has released the record’s first single “Hero Lux.”

“As not only the opening song to the entire album, but as a stand alone single, this song stands as a warning. The flow of the album to come was designed to simulate the power, pain, passions, and woes of the soul of every person that dares look within to find something more than the material world. ‘

“Hero Lux’ employs the use of the Latin word “lux” meaning light. The ‘hero light’ was a radiance said to have emanated from various mythical heroes, predominantly around the crown of the head (i.e christ halo, or the prabhamandala to the hindu myths, etc). It is a song that was designed to warn of the trials to come in order for the hero to ‘earn’ their crown of light. Cage Willis – In-Your-Face Guitar Tones

Cage Willis has released a new single titled “Who I Am” to all major platforms.

The single is from his full length album due out this summer! In support of the album release, Cage Willis will be playing a hometown show at Merchant Park in Mount Carmel, IL on May 14th.

Cage was born and raised in Mount Carmel, IL. While working with his father roofing and remodeling homes in Wabash County, he squeezed in required courses to graduate from the local community college at age 18. He started playing guitar at 13. Heavily influenced by Lincoln Brewster, Cage would play big, heart-wrenching guitar solos at area churches. His authentic sound began to emerge.

During the summer of 2017, Cage crossed paths with drummer Cameron Allen. Jamming on the likes of Gary Clark Jr., Chris Stapleton, and The Marcus King Band, the two knew that they wanted to continue to play together. They first performed in early 2019 as a two piece at a “Battle of the Bands” in Evansville, IN. Bass Guitarist Andrew Logan joined Cage and Cameron at the beginning of 2020. Today, they continue to perform together live at local venues, and opening for acts like The Cold Stares and Hairball. Cage released his first single “She Walked Away”, in early 2021. Over the course of the year, Cage recorded and released Bones (Our Town), an EP. His first full length album, a 10-track album, will debut Summer 2022.

Camiches – A Forceful Presence

Wiretap Records has announced its first-ever non-English signing — Mexico City’s Camiches (CMXS).

While sung in Spanish, the video includes English subtitles. The band announces the release of the first single off the EP, the track “Durmiendo En El Camino,” now streaming across all platforms.

Camiches’ Sinuhé López says, “Durmiendo En El Camino” is a song about adolescence from the perspective of a middle-aged adult. Every adult misses the lifestyle, feelings, experiences, and vitality of struggling and searching for meaning or direction. Adolescence is one of the most fun, crucial, spotted and determining stages in anyone’s life; hence the concern and motivation to write about its benefits.”

When asked about signing the label’s first non-English speaking band, Wiretap owner Rob Castellon commented: “As a Mexican-American myself, it gives me extreme pride to have the chance to work alongside Camiches for this release. Their Feeling Core brand of hardcore, and post-hardcore has been a staple in the DIY scene in their hometown of Mexico City. Like many more my age, especially in Southern California, I grew up embracing as much music in English as I did in Spanish. With the U.S., a country where 41 million residents speak Spanish only in the home, why wouldn’t a Spanish-speaking artist be a likely addition to the roster.”

Camiches was formed by Sinuhé, Ramses and Farid who have all been a forceful presence on the national scene since 2013. The band take their influences from hardcore, punk rock, folk, and more to create their self-styled Feeling Core sound, which has since been well received and even adopted by younger bands throughout their home country of Mexico. Throughout their years of hard work they have been very committed to the quality of their live shows and their interest in promoting messages of respect, cooperation and positive attitudes to their fans. The band has shared stages with the likes of Bad Religion, Tiger Army, Turnover, Comeback Kid, Basement and more.

Søren Solkær is a Danish photographer best known for his portraits of musicians.

Concurrent to his work with musicians, Solkær furthered his specialisation in portraits by undertaking an eight-year project. Photographers Posed comprised 45 photographers from 15 countries, including Arnold Newman, Duane Michals, Pierre et Gilles, Anton Corbijn, Jan Saudek and Jeanloup Sieff. The collection featured Solkær’s portrayals of the style associated with each of his subjects and was exhibited in galleries in Chicago, Copenhagen, Cologne, Prague and Odense.

Solkær was contributing photographer for Q Magazine, Rolling Stone and GQ. As a result, he toured with Franz Ferdinand in Russia, Metallica in Portugal and Oasis in Argentina. He has also moved into the world of cinema, photographing James Franco, Danny Boyle, Tim Burton, David Lynch and John Waters. In addition, he has taken pictures for EKKO, Gaffa and Soundvenue.
