This March, Leeds indie-rock outfit Green Gardens return with two new singles via Tiny Library Records, followed by a headline tour of the UK.
Through twangy guitars and thick fog, ‘Greeting’ explores the futility and frustrations of wanting. Wanting things to be different, wanting to go back, wanting more control. “I saw all of these feelings within myself,” explains songwriter Chris Aitchison, “and raised how easy it can be for them to distort reality and obscure the beauty of just being. Before you know it, you’re in a loop. Like a tape skipping and dragging you back over the same ground.” ‘Greeting’ is an attempt to change the cassette.
The track is accompanied by the more drawn-out, more hopeful ‘I Am Kind’, which turns its title into a mantra over seven minutes of strings and a strange buzz. The violins seem to try and try and try again, only getting there as a result of propping each other up. “All I want is to be kind. With everything that I have, how dare I not try to be,” shares Jacob Cracknell, “The chanting of this song is to help assert that.”
“In the heart of the song is my mum’s voice telling me that she’s struggling but the sun is shining. Her voice is like music to me – what could I ever want to listen to more.”
Following the release of ‘Greeting’ and ‘I Am Kind’, Green Gardens will spend March on the road. Their spring headline tour includes stops at Future Yard in Birkenhead, Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh, the Hope & Ruin in Brighton and more, before concluding at the beloved Brixton Windmill.
