Choke’ is industrial, electronic and dark but it also came from a place of love.
It’s about loving someone who has lived through trauma and the rage you feel for the person who hurt them.
The sound world is a storm of distorted and modulated human breaths, metal hits, re-sampled vocals and fierce swooping synths.
It’s confronting and abrasive but also has club rhythms running through the centre of the track that keep you captivated and send you into a trance.
It was conceived in understudies home studio set up, slowly chipping away building the sonic world and then he collaborated with Duncan Mills (LCD Soundsystem, Malcom McLaren, Florence and the Machine) on the co-production and mix.
Influences include Arca, FKA Twigs, James Blake and Nine Inch Nails to name a few.
Understudy resides in the city of London. Understudy’s mother brought him a keyboard for Christmas when he was 8 years old. She had hazel eyes and sung Luftballoons once. It made him cry.
Understudy studied music for many years. Understudy has never and will never study music.
Understudy records the sound of himself sleeping because he worries that one day he will be recruited to the military and then be captured and blunder important secrets when fast asleep.
So far, he has spoken only of Josephine.
