The Family Rain – Shake Your Pom Poms

21st April 2024
Music News

The three brothers from Bath have not lost their appetite for sweet melodies and savoury riffs.

On April 19th 2024 The Family Rain unleash their second album ‘Indulgence’ into the world. It’s been 10 years since the release of their first album ‘Under the Volcano’ (Virgin Records) but the three Walter brothers have not been sat around waiting for rain to fall.

The last 6 years have seen 3 EPs, an assault of stand alone singles and a mini album of a sun soaked side project ‘Voyages’. The new album Indulgencecame about through relentless writing/recording sessions with long time collaborator and Grammy-nominated producer Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Ghost, Pixies) and brotherly duo Bad Sounds, another set of Grammy-nominated producers in their own right.

Having experienced the large stages with support slots spanning The Rolling Stones, 30 Seconds To Mars, Biffy Clyro, Miles Kane and being no strangers to heavy tour schedules around the UK and Europe, Indulgence is “A love letter to the ambition of any band/artist rattling around in a splitter van full of warm beer, to the decadence of a service station and to the Wizard of Oz-like state that the music industry upholds, the curtain is velvet green, the lights are bright, but sweating behind the veil are three brothers working tirelessly to make something sweet for you to enjoy”, explains vocalist and lyricist Will Walter.

The album represents every aspect of the brothers combined influence from AC/DC to Scott Walker via Fat Boy Slim – if you like them hard and your melodies jagged Indulgence will turn you on. It’s a rock and roll album at heart, but wait for the aftertaste, wait further for the palate cleanser and now, who’s for dessert? With a red jelly (hand made by lead vocalist/bassist Will) donning the front cover to represent a sense of the physical and hands on nature of what the band do there can only be one message to the fans who buy this record – ‘INDULGE’.

TRACK LISTING:

1. Hit The Ground Running
2. Gasoline
3. My Other Car Is A Tiger
4. Machete Western
5. Easy When You Know How
6. Loud & Clear
7. Good Grief, Bad Grief
8. Who Let The Gods Out
9. Sabertooth
10. Four Letter Insult
11. End Of The World
12. Innocence

Alongside the album comes its next single ‘Who Let The Gods Out’, yes that was Gods…

Co-written and produced by South West Production duo Bad Sounds, The Family Rain are begging you to have fun with their latest single. It’s a modern feel-good love anthem with a Keith Richards 80’s Stones hook.

“There is too much self loathing in alternative music, occasionally it is necessary to love yourself, sometimes it’s required to call yourself a God, and every so often you are called upon to plagiarise Baha Men, luckily with this track all those boxes are ticked and the rock and roll spirit lives on”, says the band.

Country News

Guitar virtuoso/songwriter/bandleader Daniel Donato and his Cosmic Country band will make their network television debut on CBS Saturday Morning on Saturday, April 20th.

Donato and company will perform songs from his critically acclaimed sophomore album, Reflector, which came out last November via Retrace Music.

Reflector was met with high praise from the press following its release, with positive reviews from No Depression, Glide Magazine, Vintage Guitar Magazine, Magnet Magazine, and others. Donato was also the subject of features in Rolling Stone, UPROXX, Garden & Gun, Relix, and more. The album spent four weeks in the Top 10 at American Radio.

Reflector is Donato’s first collection of all original songs. They embody the continuously progressing musical space he has created for himself, which he refers to as “cosmic country.”  Donato’s cosmic country is a fusion of Southern rock, bluegrass, classic country, and honky-tonk, blended with Southern California folk and Northern California musical exploration. Silver Dollar Room – Listen Closely

20th April 2024
Music News

Silver Dollar Room are an alternative rock band from Scotland, carefully crafting songs of real life issues and the world around them.

Drawing collectively from their experiences, song writing, performances and creativity, SDR are ready to follow in the footsteps of bands such as Manic Street Preachers, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins and Bush.

They may be a new band, but it’s members have already paid their dues on the music scene. This is a band who know exactly what they are doing, where they are going and how to get there.  And they want you to listen closely as they are addressing some of the big things in life today, not just their lives but the lives of everyone. These are not mundane love songs; these are things that are hard to hear but need to be listened to.

Debut single ‘Little Things’ received positive feedback and picked up airplay across the globe allowing the band to build a platform and increase visibility for their forthcoming new release.

Melanin’ is out 3/5/24 across all platforms!
Stream via Soundcloud –
https://bit.ly/3Q5mQGc

Fronting the band is John Keenan (Vocals) best known for Edinburgh rockers DMS. His unique voice is one of the most distinctive on the scene. He has played sell-out shows in some of Scotland’s most prestigious venues and has gained massive respect for both his voice and his song writing. Driving this is a mind that needs to say something. And SDR gives him, in fact encourages him to say what he wants with no filter.

Guitarist Jamie Turnbull may be best known as Producer for bands like Dogs D’Amour, but he has been seen on stages all over the UK since he was a teenager. His gifted song writing has seen him open up for legends such as Paul Di’anno of Iron Maiden, Skindred and Breed 77. Being a ‘gun for hire’ guitar player has seen him rack up hundreds of gigs in the last ten years alone!

Lisa Aird is a professional musician and multi instrumentalist who is handling bass duties. Best known as part of Edinburgh institution AC Rid, she has also performed all over the UK and Europe as a singer. She brings not only a massive amount of musical experience and integrity, but an attitude and professionalism like no other.

Dan Colvin adds the guitar layers that hold the band together and give the extra boost they need live. A seasoned player and songwriter, Dan has shared the stage with SDR vocalist John together with DMS many times. In bands such as Art of Privilege and Scottish rapper Mog, he has shared the stage with acts such as The Fratellis and James Arthur.

Douglas McDonald is one of the most powerful drummers on the music scene, with a tribal backbeat and groove that most drummers would die for. Having racked up extensive touring and festival experience with indie rockers The Acute, he knows what the UK music is all about.

“Melanin is a song that empathises what is wrong with the world that we currently live in. It explores themes of judgment, vulnerability, identity, racial prejudice, and the struggle for autonomy in a world that often imposes limitations. The song invites reflection on our own experiences and the need for empathy and understanding.”

KRAMIES – An Enchanting Return

19th April 2024
Music News

Returning to his magical world of dark fairy tales and folklore pop – KRAMIES – will release his potent new single: “Social Light” on 19th April 2024.

His first new music since the release of his acclaimed 2022 album ‘Kramies’, which featured contributions from members of The Black Keys, Band Of Horses, and Grandaddy, the latest from the US alt/folk artist finds him teaming-up with Grammy winning producer Mario J. McNulty, who is known for his work with David Bowie, Prince, and Willow Smith to name a few.

Coined by Billboard Magazine as “the American Dreampop troubadour”, new single “Social Light” has all of the hallmarks that position his singular sound in a realm of its own. A cauldron of swirling melodies, yearning harmonies, and intoxicating melancholia; Kramies puts his soul into a song that is both as dark and enigmatic as the dead of night, yet as spacious and beautiful as a new day.

With a career spanning almost fifteen years and a long string of releases that have earned him extraordinary accolades, Kramies has a knack for eerie and ethereal songwriting that has gained him the attention of NME, Clash, NPR and the BBC and much more. His most recent self-titled LP made it onto seven “albums of the year” lists, with two of its singles featured in Top 10 radio charts. Under The Radar praised the album as possessing the “ethereal quality of a waking dreamscape”.

Much of Kramies’ success has come from his ability to be himself and stick to his clear artistic vision. He’s grown even more comfortable with his unique way of working, pushing his craft as an outsider who has firmly forged his own path and earned a cult appeal on both sides of the Atlantic in the process.

A powerful and wildly enchanting return for the Ohio songwriter, “Social Light” is the first single from a new EP due out autumn 2024 on VanGerrett Records.

Hello Cosmos – Unleashing More Cosmicness

19th April 2024
Music News

Announced fresh off the back of the band’s recent return to the stage with sets described as “a musical experience of intergalactic proportions” 1st 3 Magazine and “a truly audio-visual experience” The Manc, Hello Cosmos announce their latest single ‘Turn Off The News’ a gritty outing encompassing themes of doom and paranoia perpetuated via news headlines and media soundbites.

‘Turn Off The News’ lands as the first single from what will be the first full-band album since their acclaimed debut, currently due for release early next year.

With the initial recording taking place the day after England departed from the EU, the track developed from a studio session reflective of the dark, doomy and intense atmosphere throughout the country’s inner cities with the original working title ‘The Day After’. As the track progressed via sessions at Greenmount Studios with the band’s producer Jamie Lockheart during 2020, vocals developed around themes of negative news stories and who they serve, resulting in the title ‘Turn off The News’.

Laced with unsettling static, dramatic violins and thrashing guitar licks complimented by the punk poetry vocal style of a town crier challenging the status quo, ‘Turn off The News’ takes aim at greed and manipulation. “Divided and confused we were tainted by hate.”, “Like lambs to the slaughter of the daily papers.”

About the track vocalist Ben Robinson says;

“The story of this song threads through some dark times for me personally, the UK and the globe.

I always aim to be positive with Hello Cosmos vocals, writing from a place of sadness or negativity is much easier than making a positive statement interesting. But this track was a sign of the times so I went through my darker lyric notes, a lot had been written in the harder moments of lockdown, the 5 o’clock updates from Witty and Borris, the Twitter rabbit holes of info on how PPE contracts had been abused, the whole circus show of Hancock and the media shitshow surrounding UK politics. This is where the title of the track comes from, at that time the news was so unhealthy and was constant, it wasn’t helping people it was beating us down with doom and paranoia constantly, while the media was celebrating having something to run with that had the attention of the world….

Frustrating times all bottled up, so I took every bit of my anger and went into the vocal booth for the first scream I’d done since lockdown happened, I channelled everything I could into that chorus and let it all out, what you hear is the first and only take.”

Hello Cosmos are a Greater Manchester-centred collective of creatives. A four-piece at their core, the band are led by songwriter and bass player Ben Robinson, the founder of the celebrated bluedot & Kendal Calling festivals. Also featuring the talents of mainstay members Angela Chan on viola/synths/vocals (notably a member of the Mercury-shortlisted Lanterns on the Lake and a touring member of Placebo), powerhouse drummer Simon Robinson (brother of Ben) and the uniquely styled guitarist Adrian Ingham (of Deathretro, assisted by a stack of FX pedals); together as Hello Cosmos they are a meeting of minds of telepathic harmony with immense capability.

TURN OFF THE NEWS – OUT 17 APR 2024, VIA COSMIC GLUE

STREAM ON ALL SERVICES HERE

Unfurling a string of stimulating singles and EPs since their formation in 2017, Hello Cosmos found their breakthrough in 2019 with the obliterating electro-punk of the ‘Run for President’ EP; winning over supporters at BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and Radio X, to Under The Radar and Louder Than War in the process. In 2021 Hello Cosmos released their acclaimed debut LP: ‘Dream Harder’ with Louder Than War praising it as a record “guaranteed to knock your socks off” (4.5/5). In the latter half of 2021, Robinson teamed up with US-based producer The Olchemist for a collaborative mixtape effort entitled ‘Golden Dirt’, which was written and recorded in the lockdown of that year. In 2023, Hello Cosmos unveiled the remix album ‘Hard Dirt (Remixed’, which featured thumping reworkings of HC tracks by Jagz Kooner, Richard Norris, Catu Diosis, Foxtrap, Joe Thompson and more. Across their projects to date, Hello Cosmos have worked with an impressive 50+ collaborators and counting…

Bobbyy – Spinning Around

18th April 2024
Music News

Bobbyy is a producer, drummer and DJ based in Los Angeles.

Born Bobby Granfelt, he is best known for his work with the acclaimed US West Coast experimental jazz collective High Pulp and the electro/hip-hop duo sunking, but 2024 sees Bobbyy stepping out as a solo artist with ‘Buckets’, his eclectic debut solo album.

In part an homage to his deep love and understanding of music history, ‘Buckets’ incorporates elements of Chicago House a la Larry Heard, alongside raw, sample-based production reminiscent of Madlib or Daedelus, all the while basking in 808s.

‘Thence I Arrived On A Foreign Shore’ has been released as the second single from the album today. Featuring US rap/HipHop artists Pink Siifu & Stas THEE Boss, they bless a track inspired by ’90s Chicago House with modern syrup-dripped synthesisers, its laidback vibe heralding the early arrival of summer.

It follows ‘I Was At The Fence’ [STREAM], a collaboration between Bobbyy and long-time friend Rachel Lime issued in March. Bobbyy has also recently released ‘Sway’, a non-album collaboration with South Florida rapper Blvck Svm.

In the wild, Bobbyy can be found spinning boogie records on a sunny afternoon or DJing breaks and footwerk at your favourite night club.

Hagalas – Do Something With Your Life

18th April 2024
Mainly Metal

The rising star of melodic death metal, Hagalas, has released the second single titled “Remembrance Fades” from their upcoming album “Mentes Reae” along with a lyric video.

The album “Mentes Reae” by Finnish melodic death metal band Hagalas will be released via Inverse Records on May 31, 2024, as a physical edition, and will be available on streaming platforms as a whole in early autumn 2024.

The timely theme of the album, depicting the multifaceted aspects of mental health, also resonates in the newly released track. The message of the song revolves around the continuous search for meaning in human life, and how at the end, the character of the story realizes that their life has been spent chasing meaningless pursuits, and the time given has been questionably utilized. Perhaps the message is to do something with your life before it’s too late.

The song is available on streaming platforms, and a lyric video has been created, which can be viewed on Inverse Records’ and the band’s channels.

Rosalie James – We’re Not Alone

18th April 2024
Music News

Rosalie James is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Cornwall, UK.

She grew up learning piano and guitar, listening to The Beatles and The Bangles on her bright yellow Sony Walkman, weeping over the impassioned drama of 80s synth-pop and new wave, obsessing over the lyrics of 90s dreampop and indie artists and drawing inspiration from anyone who could write a good song.

Rosalie has experienced sensory sensitivities and difficulty managing emotions and social interaction since she was nine years old. She has been treated for severe depression and anxiety, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and substance use issues but it wasn’t until January 2023 that she was finally diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder. For the first time, she feels able to live an authentic life. After two degrees and ten years working as a Social Worker in social care and mental health, Rosalie decided in June 2023 that it was time to return to her creative roots. Her desire to change the world abides, instead using her music to raise awareness and reduce stigma in areas including neurodiversity, domestic violence, addiction and mental health.

Rosalie’s recent Kickstarter campaign raised £5000 in 28 days on the strength of a short video including clips of her songs. She played a range of festival gigs over the summer of 2023, supported top UK pianist Ben Waters at Mylor Sessions and appeared on Radio Cornwall for some amusing and direct interviews. Her previous singles Will We Ever Rest? and her cover of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill received adds on BBC Introducing South West to huge positive response from listeners.

Rosalie writes and records prolifically and has a back catalogue of over 200 songs (growing every couple of weeks), giving her a head-start for future albums and publishing/sync deals. Her songs have already been featured on UK primetime soap opera Hollyoaks and US drama The Black Donnellys.

Rosalie’s music is expected to appeal equally to fans of classic songwriters (Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Carole King, Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac, Deacon Blue) and progressive and emotionally literate indie artists (Conor Oberst, Elliot Smith, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Bon Iver, boygenius, The National). She has a broad reach, with brutally honest and striking lyrics, hooky tunes, a dreamily soulful voice, and a slightly chaotic stage presence.

It is relevant that a lot of Rosalie’s forthcoming album Full of Chemicals was produced and recorded in Los Angeles. Her father lived in California during the early 70s, touring as a stage manager, roadie and lighting engineer for Grateful Dead, Wings, Santana and The Tubes. She’s spent her whole life hearing about the West Coast of the US, both the landscape and the musical influences, and this gives an interesting circular narrative. Her recent trip to Los Angeles allowed her to finalise the lead vocals for the album in Balboa Recording Studio, with producer Daniel Knowles (Sharon Van Etten).

To give an idea of the quality of work you can expect, Rosalie’s forthcoming album features contributions from Jorge Balbi (Sharon Van Etten), Lukas Frank (Storefront Church), Steve Jackson (Leo Sayer, Elkie Brooks), Garett Lang (Henry Wolfe, Lisa Loeb) and Jason Abraham Roberts (Norah Jones, Ben Kweller).

Leading single “Girl I Was” is a storytelling narrative of an important but destructive relationship from the artist’s past. The raw and honest song chronicles when someone gives one owns power away and the self growth that needs to occur to move on.

While the second song “Soft Target” “is for the generations of women who weren’t diagnosed as neurodivergent until adulthood because they just seemed A Lot. It’s for the ‘over-sensitive drama queens,’ who attracted people that liked us a little crazy and vulnerable but had nothing to give us. I’m still awkward and difficult and scared of balloons. I lost a career and I’m full of chemicals. But I’m not alone. We’re not alone,” confides Rosalie.

Full of Chemicals is a lush mix of dreampop, indie rock, folk and Americana. The upcoming album is a cathartic and important listen, an autobiographical diary of the artist’s own struggles with neurodiversity, toxic relationships, addiction and mental health.

“There is so much I want to say, and the depths of terminal sadness and fleeting joy can only be properly expressed through music – any other form of communication is corrupted by confusion and doubt. Maybe feeling too much is actually feeling exactly the right amount when you’re trying to make something meaningful. Anyway, I can’t stop now.” – Rosalie James.

SKINNY LISTER – ‘SHANTY PUNK’ ALBUM – OUT NOW, VIA XTRA MILE RECORDINGS – STREAM HERE

Since 2009, Skinny Lister have been at the forefront of first-rate folk/punk in the UK. Making waves with the irrepressible energy of their debut album ‘Forge and Flagon’ in 2012, the London-formed crew went on to sign with Xtra Mile Recordings for the release of their classic second album ‘Down On Deptford Broadway’ (2014) and so beginning a partnership that has birthed a further four records with the label including ‘The Devil, The Heart, The Fight’ (2016), ‘The Story Is…’ (2019), ‘A Matter Of Life & Love’ (2021), and most recently ‘Shanty Punk’.

Given its mastering polish at the iconic Abbey Road Studios by Frank Arkwright, their latest effort ‘Shanty Punk’ finds the band delivering their most autobiographical and arguably most definitive Skinny Lister album yet. A concept album all about the myths and madness that have have defined Skinny Lister themselves, it was warmly received by The Morning Star who praised in a 5* review “If you’re feeling out of sorts and in need of festive cheering up, the exuberant Deptford sextet Skinny Lister are the remedy, the balm that no festive season can do without. Ever.”, whilst RNR Magazine hailed the record as “very good…raucous!” (4*).

Have a look at what 1st 3 have said about Skinny Lister HERE

As the band’s career continues to see them passing the growing flagon of their experiences with every album and tour. They’ve led an endless parade gathering fans old and new, from the respected folk circuit to the riotous Download Festival, igniting pogoing mosh-pits at each. Over the past ten years they’ve travelled from rain-soaked London to the vast arteries of the USA, upgrading from narrow boat to Salty Dog Cruise, played huge tours across Europe and North America and headlined themselves across festivals, sweatboxes and ever-larger venues. Performing with some of music’s most tenacious live acts from Dropkick Murphys to Frank Turner, Boy George to Beans on Toast to The Bouncing Souls, not to mention reigniting their US fanbase with an epic tour across America with Flogging Molly in 2023; Skinny Lister’s formidable live rep more than proceeds them.

And now with the tantalising promise of some potential new material on the horizon, catch Skinny Lister doing what they do best at a UK venue near you this Winter.
