Los Angeles melodic punks Stoke Signals return with Making Enemies, a four-song EP that captures the band’s loudest, rawest, and most collaborative work to date.
The release arrives via Hey! Fever Records and follows their 2024 debut LP Make Dying Fun, which Punk Rock Theory praised for delivering “all the energy and melody you can ask for, delivered with a healthy dose of grit.”
The band—Giuliano Messina (vocals/guitar), Chris Perez (guitar/vocals), Jordan Calhoun (bass), and Michael Nusbaum (drums)—leaned fully into their DIY roots, self-recording in their Culver City lockout space with amps dimed, drum mics aimed at a toilet for reverb, and gang vocals shouted behind bathroom doors. The chaos was later mastered by Paul Miner (Death By Stereo, Thrice), preserving the sweat-drenched live energy that’s quickly becoming their signature.
A lyric video for the track “The Beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade With River Phoenix Still Gets Me So Hyped”is now streaming.
“This song is probably the most Stoke Signaly song of our discography. Not so much that it sounds the most like a Stoke Signals song (it actually doesn’t because most of our songs are E-C#m-A – now you know our secret) , but just like everything about how it was made. Jordan started the skeleton of the song with a demo he made for his old band he was in a few years ago that never got used. He uploaded it to the drive and then G stokified it with better riffs because Jordan sucks at guitar. Mike then made the drums super sick. After G wrote lyrics Chris and Jordan added some gang vocal parts and then we got Chris Stout from Heartwells to join in on the fun and we even added some organs to impress our uncle’s in Empired. At the time the song was called “Heart Attack On A Plane Over the Pacific” but one day Mike randomly texted our group chat saying: “the beginning of indiana jones and the last crusade with river phoenix still gets me so hyped” and we were like, you know what, that’s what this song needs to be called instead. It kind of works because that scene is super epic and this is one of our more epic songs, with the big riffy intro and one of our more dynamic bridges. If this song doesn’t get you pregnant, nothing will.”
Since erupting onto the scene in 2024, Stoke Signals have played relentless shows across California, sharing stages with everyone from The Lawrence Arms to Dillinger Four. Highlights include a buzzworthy set at Camp Punksylvania 2025 and an August tour with labelmates Heartwells. Outlets from Scene Point Blank to IDIOTEQ have compared them to Strike Anywhere, The Get Up Kids, Audio Karate, and even Dude Ranch-era Blink-182—if Blink were a Fest band with something urgent to say.
