Micko & The Mellotronics have announced their new single, âWould You Believe Itâ, set for release on 31st July via Landline Records.Â
âWould You Believe Itâ is a song about first moments and last moments, and frontman Micko Westmorelandâs experience of each. Sonically indebted to the new wave era, the track finds Micko journeying to the heart of it all, declaring, âDo what you can to make it okay, find a peace, prepare the way.â The initial inspiration for the song came from Mickoâs father, as he explains:
âThe phrase that holds the songâs title, my Dad said to me when suffering pneumonia in hospital, he was so pleased to see me! The line of course holds contradictory meanings and I knew there was a song in there but had to wait a few years for the rest of it to turn up. Its lyrical coda came by way of my old chum Neil Innes. When my son was born he said to me, you realise what we are put here to do. Make more of ourselves.â
Micko is joined on the track by Paul Cuddeford on guitar and ebow, Budge Magraw on bass, and Jan Noble on drums (both ex-Cesarians). The Mellotronics frontman worked closely with Cuddeford, in particular, on the arrangements for the new album in between his commitments with Holy Holy, The Boomtown Rats and his solo work. Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones), a friend of Mickoâs, was involved in production advice on the track.Â
The new track is also accompanied by a black-and-white music video, directed by Cameron Poole, which sees Micko wading through water fully dressed. âI realised I had to get in the water,â the singer explains, âand that would hold considerable meaning in itself with notions of rebirth, cleansing and transformation. That became the purpose of the film and is also the lyrical centre of the song. The use of black and white and creative colour was put together by Cameron and I. It was the second time we had worked together and we both felt had crystallised into something symbiotic to the song.â
âWould You Believe Itâ marks the first single from Micko & The Mellotronicsâ upcoming album âThe Trinityâ, scheduled for release in early 2026. Thematically, the record takes from the experience of mid-life issues, reflections on the past, politics with a small âpâ and social observation. Human behaviour and its motivations have always been key elements in Westmorelandâs work.

The Mellotronics formed in 2017 with the intention of turning Micko Westmorelandâs songwriting skills into a dynamic live prospect, and released their debut album â1/2 Dove 1/2 Pigeonâ in 2020. The new incarnation of The Mellotronics sees Mickoâs rabble-rousing vocals and spiky, agitational guitar work augmented perfectly by the crack squad of drummer Jan Noble and Budge Magraw on bass (both previously from The Cesarians). Paul Cuddeford (Boomtown Rats) moonlights when in town.Â
Since then theyâve been busy cutting their teeth with a series of shows around the capital and beyond, making return visits to the 100 Club in Oxford Street and earning multiple requests for support slots from acts as established as Evan Dando (Lemonheads), The Woodentops (who Micko now plays guitar with), David Devant & His Spirit Wife, Blue Orchids, Sheep on Drugs, The Television Personalities and The Monochrome Set. Bringing a new dimension of sharp and economic post-punk/new wave attitude to the diverse Westmoreland songbook, theyâve been already been favourably compared to The Jam, PiL, Wire, XTC and Pulp as well as the mean, lean but undeniably powerful sound of Idles or Shame. The Mellotronics however have their own sound although the above references may spring to mind.
