Funebrarum is an American death metal band formed in Clifton, New Jersey, New Jersey, in April 1999 by underground veterans, vocalist Daryl Kahan (also of Citizens Arrest, formerly of Assuck, Born Against, Forced
Expression etc), guitarist, Nick Orlando (formerly of Evoken), drummer, Dario Derna (formerly of Evoken and Infester) and bassist, David Wagner (of Evoken).
The group is renowned worldwide for a dark and heavy sound that blends traditional American Death Metal with influences from the European and Scandinavian Death Metal scenes of late 80’s and early 1990’s (such as Bolt Thrower, Demigod, Abhorrence etc). In 2001, their debut full-length album “Beneath the Columns of Abandoned
Gods” was released on the American label, Necroharmonic Productions and received praise worldwide from the underground Death Metal scene. After several years of shows and activity, a few members moved away prompting Daryl to welcome new members into the fold, including live guitarist, Alex Bouks (Immolation) and drummer, Shawn Eldridge.
In 2009, Funebrarum released their second album entitled” The Sleep of Morbid Dreams” on the German label, Cyclone Empire, which received widespread critical acclaim and cemented the band’s status as masters of old school death metal. The band had several successful European tours and festival appearances during this period. Again, members left the area to pursue careers and other interests which led to years of relative inactivity for Funebrarum. Daryl, playing guitar and bass, formed and played in other bands during this period ie: Disma, Spectral Prophecy, Darkened (ex- Necrophobic, Grave, Excruciate and Bolt Thrower).
In 2015, Daryl met guitarist, Samuel Osborne from Olympia, Washington and decided to reform Funebrarum with new members. The duo brought in Charles Koryn on drums, (fellow NY’er) Kyle Winslow on Bass and French Canadian, Phil Tougas on second guitar, whom they met during the band’s performance in Montreal. With a new line-up solidified the band recorded an EP in 2016 entitled “Exhumation of the Ancient”, which was well received internationally. The band toured Europe successfully several times with notable bands like Interment and Undergang, playing many great shows and festivals worldwide.
With members on different coasts of the US and in Canada, Funebrarum continued to compose material during writing trips to Portland as well as while on tour in Europe and Mexico.
In 2019, Funebrarum entered Charles Koryn’s Elektric City studio to record their third-full length album “Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence”, with instrumentation starting in Portland, Oregon and vocals, leads and mixing completed at Sound Spa Studios in Edison, New Jersey, with well-known engineer, Steven Di Acutis ( Ripping Corpse, Evoken, Disma) behind the board. Daryl’s friend Patrik Fernlund of Gorement (Sweden) played several leads on the album.
2020 – 2025 – A long (but temporary) hiatus for Funebrarum occurred due to the pandemic, career and familial responsibilities. With Daryl’s album paintings and layouts now finalized , “Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence” is scheduled for release on Pulverised Records in May 2026.
Preceding the album will be a split 7” EP with friend’s Pestigore (Finland) to be released on Morbid Wrath Records / Doomentia Records in April. Funebrarum will be performing at Killtown Deathfest in Copenhagen on September 4th 2026. The band’s first comeback performance since 2019, followed by a European Tour. Tour Dates in the works.
