“I came up with this phrase while improvising on my VoiceLive vocal processor: ‘Venus, you’re my everything.’ It became a mantra and a doorway into the song,” Christian explains. “I was drawn to the image of Venus as the mythological embodiment of love and attraction, but I wasn’t interested in portraying her as a perfect goddess, but rather a force of nature, both divine and predatory. In the song, she gradually takes on spider-like qualities. Like spiders, she relies on attraction rather than pursuit. She is beautiful and magnetic, yet quietly dangerous.

Lines like ‘Venus’ virtue she bites and bites’ and ‘I kept your voice in a vial’ came from thinking about how love can become something we preserve, worship and willingly surrender ourselves to, even when it begins to undo us or fill us with fear. This danger and duality doesn’t diminish love’s beauty; it just exists alongside it.

The end/refrain ‘I’ll keep on running’ became just as important as the song title itself. It’s not a line about escape. It’s about the strange feeling of spending years trying to outrun someone who still occupies a part of your inner self. You keep going, but part of you remains caught in the gravity of someone who once meant everything. Like a spider’s web, love can continue to hold you long after you’ve stopped trying to hold onto it.

In mythology, gods aren’t something you simply leave behind. They continue to shape your fate; they aren’t good or bad, they’re simply forces greater than ourselves. Venus, in this song, isn’t malicious; she’s simply a powerful force.

So ultimately, Venus became a way of talking about my own life through mythology, something I do quite a lot throughout this new record, Queen of Ashes.”
